Shopify SEO for Better Rankings
and Revenue

Somewhere between “we’re getting some organic traffic” and “we’re leaving real revenue on the table,” a lot of eCommerce founders start asking the same question: Is our Shopify SEO actually working, or are we just getting the easy wins and missing everything else?

If you’re running a Shopify or Shopify Plus store and the organic traffic isn’t matching the effort, Shopify itself may not be the problem. The platform handles a lot of the basics out of the box, but “basics covered” isn’t the same as “optimized for search.” That gap is where many stores lose ground.

This page helps you figure out where that gap may be showing up in your store. We’ll walk through what good Shopify SEO looks like, where stores commonly fall short, and when a Shopify SEO partner is worth the spend. Read our article How Shopify SEO helps high-growth brands and take a deeper look at the strategy. For now, this page keeps it to a fast gut check.

What good Shopify SEO actually looks like

Before we get into what's broken, here's the standard. Strong SEO for Shopify doesn't come down to any one thing. It's a stack of small pieces working together, and these are the Shopify SEO best practices we look for first.

Our Shopify decision guide looks at the platform as a whole. Here, we’re zooming in on SEO.

Most stores have room to improve in at least one area, and that’s normal. What matters is knowing where you’re weakest and what to fix first. For the paid and email work that runs alongside SEO, see our Shopify marketing strategies.

Signs your Shopify SEO needs a closer look

The checklist above is the standard. This is the self-audit: the Shopify-specific issues that can undermine it even when the basics appear covered. Some trace back to how the storefront was built, and our Shopify store design and UX infographic digs deeper into that side.

  • Google is crawling URL versions you didn’t intend to create
Shopify handles many common duplicate-URL issues automatically. But as themes, apps, filters, and internal links are customized, extra URL versions can still create crawl or indexing issues.

The result is weaker visibility, the wrong page appearing in search, and messier reporting.

  • Apps and third-party code weigh down key pages
A homepage speed test doesn’t tell the whole story. Product and collection pages may load reviews, subscription tools, tracking scripts, recommendations, and other features that the homepage doesn’t.

Check what loads on the pages shoppers actually land on—and whether each feature is worth the performance tradeoff.

  • Migrations and catalog changes leave old URLs behind
Redirect gaps don’t happen only during a full replatform. Changing product handles, rebuilding collections, removing products, and restructuring the catalog can all leave old URLs pointing to dead ends.

When there’s a clear replacement, send the old URL there. When there isn’t, a proper 404 may be better than an irrelevant trip to the homepage.

  • Product data falls out of sync
Price and availability can live in several places: the product page, its structured data, and a Merchant Center feed. When those sources disagree, Google gets conflicting information.

To address this, pay particular attention after changing pricing logic or installing feed, subscription, or structured-data apps.

  • International setup sends mixed signals
Shopify automates much of the international SEO setup when Markets is configured correctly, including market-specific URLs, canonical tags, hreflang tags, and sitemaps.

But problems can still surface when domains, subfolders, languages, theme code, hreflang tools, and the rest of the setup don’t line up.

Not every store will face every issue here. The goal isn’t to collect problems. It’s to find the ones affecting your setup, understand the likely impact, and fix what matters most first.

How many of those
gaps sound familiar?

If more than a few hit home, a free Shopify SEO audit is one of the fastest ways to see the full picture. No SEO smoke and mirrors. Just a clear read on what’s working, what isn’t, and where to start.

Where a Shopify SEO partner plugs in

Many Shopify SEO tasks aren’t especially complicated on their own. The hard part is doing it all in the right order without disrupting what already works.

At Four13, we turn that long list of moving parts into a prioritized plan. Our Shopify SEO service typically includes:

  • A full Shopify SEO audit mapped against the issues above.
  • Technical fixes focused on the highest-impact areas, from site speed and structured data to variant URLs and migration redirects.
  • Ongoing on-page optimization across products, collections, and content pages.
  • A content plan based on real search demand in your category, not guesswork.
  • Reporting that tracks search visibility, organic traffic, conversions, and attributed revenue—and shows exactly what changed.

We’re a Shopify Plus Partner, and we don’t treat SEO like a side project. We connect it with paid media and email when a brand needs every channel pulling in the same direction.

Case in point: our work with a gourmet gift brand, which saw a 14% lift in average order value. SEO is one piece of that, but it's the piece that keeps compounding month over month.

Whether you need a one-time Shopify SEO audit, ongoing support, or clarity on how SEO fits into your broader Shopify strategy, we can meet you where you are.

Picking your priorities

You don’t need to fix every gap at once. What you need is a clear read on which ones are actually costing you traffic, revenue, and rankings right now, so the work you do next actually moves the needle. That's the point of an audit. A fresh set of eyes on your setup, a shortlist of what to fix first, and a plan for the rest.

Whether you take that plan and run it in-house or bring in a Shopify SEO agency to handle it, you’ll spend the next quarter working on the right things instead of guessing. Our marketing services show how SEO works alongside paid media and email to help you build on what the audit uncovers.
