Shopify Marketing Strategies for Paid Media and Email Growth

You’ve launched. The store looks good. Orders are coming in. But somewhere between “we should probably run more ads” and “why isn’t email pulling more weight?” most growing brands hit the same wall. They aren’t sure which channel to lean into next or how to get more from the ones already running.

This isn't a beginner's guide on how to promote your Shopify store. It's a working overview of two channels that carry much of the growth load: paid media and email marketing (including the lifecycle flows that keep customers coming back).

We’ll cover what each channel is really for, what a healthy setup looks like, and how they drive better results together.

Still choosing the platform itself? Our comprehensive Shopify platform guide covers that decision. Here, we’re focusing on what comes next: how to market your Shopify store more effectively.

How Shopify marketing breaks down

Once you're past launch, growth usually comes down to two jobs: bringing in the right customers and keeping those you've already earned. Most Shopify marketing services organize around this split.

Paid media usually does more of the acquisition work. Email and lifecycle marketing usually do more of the retention work. When both are healthy, they reinforce each other, and the results compound. When one is weak, brands tend to overpay for growth or leave repeat revenue sitting on the table.

SEO is the third leg for many Shopify brands, but it runs on a different clock and deserves its own conversation. How we approach Shopify SEO picks up that thread separately.

Here’s how we approach paid media and email at Four13—and what we’ve seen work.

Paid media: from prospecting and retargeting to maximizing your product feed

Paid media is one of the fastest ways to test offers, reach new audiences, and capture existing demand. Prospecting introduces the brand to new shoppers, while retargeting brings interested visitors back. Your product feed helps determine which products can appear across relevant campaign types.

But all those moving parts also give wasted spend plenty of places to hide.

A campaign can look fine at the account level while budget leaks into weak audiences, stale creative, irrelevant search terms, underperforming products, or landing pages no one has checked in months.

What a healthy paid setup looks like

For many Shopify brands we work with, we build paid media around two main jobs:

  • Prospecting reaches new potential customers—often through Meta and TikTok for discovery. Google Ads for Shopify stores can also help capture existing demand, with Search and Shopping campaigns reaching shoppers who are actively looking for products like yours.
  • Retargeting brings back people who have already interacted with the store. Their actions, from viewing a product to starting checkout, can be used to build audience segments and shape the creative or products they see.

For campaigns that run from a product feed, that data can support both jobs and keep working beyond the first purchase. Depending on the platform, products can be grouped using custom labels or product sets based on seasonality, sales performance, margin, or whether they tend to drive higher-value baskets.

Catalog campaigns can then surface relevant products to new prospects, show returning visitors items they viewed or added to their carts, and support cross-sell or upsell campaigns for existing customers.

The mistake we see most often isn’t the channel itself. It’s treating every campaign like it has the same job—then wondering why ROAS won’t move.

The storefront still has to do its part. If the ad earns the click but the product page doesn’t give shoppers a reason to buy, the leak may be on the site side.

How we run it at Four13

At Four13, every dollar spent should earn its return. That's why our paid strategy goes beyond the obvious wins to find the growth within reach: account audits, untapped high-intent buyers, creative testing, landing page alignment, and reporting your finance team can actually read.

Shopify email marketing across the customer lifecycle

Paid media brings people to the door. Email and lifecycle marketing give them a reason to come back. Done well, email can be one of the highest-return channels in the stack. But when key flows are missing, much of that value stays untapped.

The lifecycle email flows that matter

The best email marketing for Shopify isn't a bigger campaign calendar. It's a set of always-on flows tied to what shoppers do and where they are in the customer journey:

  • Welcome introduces new subscribers to the brand and guides them toward a first purchase.
  • Browse and cart abandonment follows up with shoppers who showed interest but left without buying.
  • Post-purchase picks up after the sale with product education, review requests, replenishment, and a clear next step
  • Winback re-engages customers whose usual buying window has passed.
  • Loyalty and VIP recognize and reward your highest-value customers.

Together, these flows can help improve repeat purchase rate, grow the base of returning customers, and increase customer lifetime value. Leave too many of these flows out, and more customers may fall away before making their next purchase.

How we build it at Four13

We connect Shopify and email marketing through Klaviyo, one of our core partners. Our team maps flows around what shoppers actually do, then handles the strategy, copy, design, build, and reporting. That gives you a clearer view of which messages are contributing to revenue and which ones are just taking up space. Klaviyo also runs email and SMS on the same flow, so an abandoned-cart sequence can email first and text later without switching tools.

The same principle applies outside eCommerce. One nonprofit client came to us mid-campaign, short of their goal and running out of time. We rebuilt their email program and helped them raise $35K toward a $40K goal with 20 days still on the clock.

Where Shopify marketing automation ties it all together

Paid media and email work better when they’re connected through shared customer and conversion signals. Shopify marketing automation tools handle the triggered work, from browse and cart flows to post-purchase email and SMS. The wider stack connects those signals to ad measurement and reporting.

Set up well, those systems can help turn a first order into a longer customer relationship and show whether the acquisition math still works beyond day one. Set up poorly, the same shopper can get two welcome series, a cart text after buying, and an ad for the product already sitting on their doorstep.

Making the call on where to invest

If you’re deciding where the next dollar should go, here’s the advice we give clients:

  • If paid ROAS is dropping, don’t default to more budget. Check the tracking, creative, audience, offer, bidding, product feed, and landing page. Scaling a leak only costs more.
  • If email looks weak, don’t judge it by revenue share alone. Look at flow coverage, list growth, deliverability, revenue per recipient, attribution, and the buying cycle. A percentage without context won’t tell you what’s broken.
  • If paid media and email sit with different teams, don’t let them run as different businesses. Separate partners can work. Separate goals, data, calendars, and reporting can create blind spots.
  • Get a second set of eyes before you renegotiate any contract. A focused audit almost always pays for itself.

The right question isn’t “Which channel should we double down on?” It’s “Where is the system losing efficiency—and what should we fix first?” Our marketing services are built to answer exactly that question.

When paid media and email marketing are both in play, we connect the work through an integrated approach so priorities are clear and every channel pulls in the same direction.
